When I was your age…

How many times have you caught yourself saying this to your kids?

I used to LOATHE my parents saying this to me.. and now I do it All.The.Time.

I tend to say it mainly when we are watching a movie, listening to a song, picking out clothes, disciplining them… the usuals. But today I’m just going to touch on the film/entertainment area.

For example, I think THIS is a classic…

The Sound of Music

Just click over and have a little listen. Oh the memories… I still know knew every word to the songs “Sixteen going on Seventeen” & “My Favourite Things”

So.. the clever Mommy that I am, I thought … Hey! I’ll buy the DVD for my girls and we’ll have a ‘movie night’ with popcorn, chocolates and all those yummy things, and they will LOVE Maria as much as I do.

WHAT. WAS. I. THINKING?

We weren’t 5 minutes into the movie and one was spinning round doing her break-dancing on the carpet, one had creeped the laptop onto her lap, and one was moaning and whinging at full volume about how BOOORRRINNGG this movie is, and please can we put Drake & Josh on rather. Drake & Josh?? Who the heck are Drake & Josh?? I don’t recall one of the Von Trapp kids being called Drake. Or Josh for that matter.

Why oh Why are my children SO uncultured!!!??

The words ‘Children learn by Example’ are screaming in my head right now.

So that’s it. That’s my mission.

I WILL introduce my kids to some form of culture, starting with learning to love The Sound Of Music. Or any other Classic Movie  for that matter. This could be a challenge… but I’ll keep you updated on my progress.

Hello Maria, So long Drake & Josh! Catch YOU on the flip side. Huzzah.

About Kerry
Kerry is a mom of 3 girls, ages 11, 9 & 6. They live in the beautiful English Countryside after emigrating there from South-Africa. To keep her sanity (well to TRY and keep it) Kerry blogs about the everyday things that go on in her crazy, but loveable house. She has a wicked sense of humour, cannot for the life of her bake a cupcake, and likes to think she is very cool, but still uses words like RAD. Be Warned... she says 'Whoop Whoop' a LOT. Kerry can also be found at Life. As I know it.

I love culture – but unfortunately, hubby would rather have his ears pulled out with pliers. Since he is the hero right now, I am waiting patiently until I can sneak the next bit of culture into their little brains. Fortunately, we live near Hometown America, so there is plenty of culture to be had! You should see what we do around here for Thanksgiving!

Mine love Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Pete’s Dragon!
The Sound Of Music is a bit beyond them but role on the Christmas Films!

Good luck with that one!! I have a teenager and I was raving about The Lost Boys film, which ok is a bit dated, but I love it. He watched about ten minutes told me it was total crap and went to bed!!! The cheek of if!

For me, it was Fraggle Rock and The Muppet Show. The kids sat there, stared at it and barely showed a lukewarm response. After the shows were over and I was waiting on the edge of my seat to see what they thought, they said, “It’s okay if you still like these shows but we’d rather watch Nickelodeon.”

    A-holes.

My husband convinced our son to watch Alf (anyone remember that show)? For whatever reason that show tickles my husband’s funny bone and I loved listening to the two of them laugh.

I actually say something similar to my husband quite often…he’s seven years younger. I actually introduced him to Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and he loved em both.

Is it bad that I still know all the words? And when I watch this movie, I sing and dance like an idiot? And maybe worse, that I love any movie with music, and sing and dance to those too? And download soundtracks so I can listen to musicals in the car?

No, I’m not lame. Not at all…

I play the musicals for my twin 7 year olds, and they LOVE them. Their favorite is “The Music Man,” but I think it’s because they love the song “Shipoopi,” mostly because it gives them permission to say “poopie.”
